The Busan Tourism Organization (BTO), led by President Lee Jung-sil, announced on September 14 that it has become the first public institution in South Korea to obtain the international standard certification for the ISO/UNDP FDIS 53001:2026 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Management System. A commemorative plaque-unveiling ceremony was successfully held on September 11 to mark this monumental milestone.

This achievement represents a significant leap forward from conventional Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) frameworks. By aligning its overall operational strategies, project execution, and performance monitoring directly with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), BTO has institutionalized sustainability as a core operational standard. 

Understanding the ISO 53001 Standard 

ISO 53001 is a cutting-edge international management system standard developed to help organizations systematically link the UN SDGs with their corporate policies, core objectives, execution tasks, Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and continuous improvement cycles. Unlike traditional standalone ESG initiatives, ISO 53001 provides a structured, risk-based framework that bridges macro-level global sustainability goals with micro-level organizational execution, ensuring transparency, accountability, and measurable long-term impacts. 

Implementation and Strategic Internalization

BTO initiated preparations for this rigorous certification process in April, conducting comprehensive gap analyses of its existing operational frameworks. The organization meticulously restructured its management manuals, operating procedures, SDGs-linked targets, and KPIs to match strict international benchmarks. To ensure complete organizational buy-in, BTO conducted internal auditor training programs, rigorous internal audits, and executive management reviews, thereby embedding a culture of continuous sustainability enhancement.

Through this transition, the organization successfully linked previously fragmented ESG activities into a cohesive performance management chain: “Management Strategy – SDGs – Action Tasks – Performance Indicators – Evaluation and Feedback.” This structural shift ensures that sustainability is permanently integrated into the core fabric of BTO’s administrative and tourism operations. 

Future Outlook and Leadership Commitment

Building upon this historic achievement, BTO plans to further strengthen the synergy between its major tourism initiatives, ESG action tasks, and the UN SDGs. The organization aims to deliver tangible, sustainable tourism outcomes that both local communities and visitors can genuinely experience and appreciate. 

The plaque-unveiling ceremony on September 11 was attended by BTO President Lee Jung-sil, key executive staff, Kiwa Korea Director Lee Jong-young, and Korea Tourism Management Technology Institute Senior Committee Chair Kim Yong-sik, who gathered to celebrate the official delivery of the certificate and unveil the monument.

President Lee Jung-sil emphasized the significance of the milestone, stating, "This certification proves that our commitment to the SDGs goes far beyond a mere declaration; we have successfully established them as practical, actionable criteria for our management, projects, and performance evaluations. As the first public institution in the nation to achieve this standard, we accept the responsibility to make sustainability a core competitive edge for Busan tourism. We will lead the way in ensuring that the growth of our tourism industry directly translates into regional development and shared value for our citizens."
