Lee Byung-hun Vies for Best Actor Against Hollywood Heavyweights

SEOUL/LOS ANGELES – South Korean cinema and content have once again asserted their presence on the global stage, with director Park Chan-wook’s latest film, ‘No Choice (어쩔수가없다)’, and the Netflix-produced K-pop animated feature, ‘K-Pop Demon Hunters (케데헌, KDH)’, each securing three nominations at the prestigious 83rd Golden Globe Awards.

The nominations, announced on December 8 (local time), highlight the increasing global recognition and mainstream appeal of Korean creative works. The Golden Globe Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on January 11 next year.

‘No Choice’ Earns Triple Nod, Including Best Picture and Best Actor

Park Chan-wook’s ‘No Choice’ emerged as a strong contender in multiple categories. The film was nominated for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, where it will compete against titles such as ‘Blue Moon,’ ‘Bugonia,’ ‘Marty Supreme,’ ‘Nouvelle Vague,’ and ‘One Battle After Another.’

Significantly, the film also secured a nomination for Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language, pitting it against five other international films, including the Brazilian entry, ‘The Secret Agent.’

The most anticipated nomination, however, is for the film’s lead star, Lee Byung-hun, who was nominated for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Lee faces a formidable field of renowned Hollywood actors, including Ethan Hawke (‘Blue Moon’), George Clooney (‘Jay Kelly’), Jesse Plemons (‘Bugonia’), Leonardo DiCaprio (‘One Battle After Another’), and Timothée Chalamet (‘Marty Supreme’). This nomination underscores Lee Byung-hun’s stature as a truly global actor.

K-Pop Demon Hunters Vies for Animation and Original Song

The K-pop-themed animated feature, ‘K-Pop Demon Hunters (KDH),’ produced by Netflix, also garnered three nominations, affirming the global power of the K-pop phenomenon blended with high-quality animation.

KDH is nominated for Best Motion Picture – Animated, competing with major studio releases like ‘Zootopia 2’ and ‘Arco.’ The film also received nominations for Best Original Song and the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award, reflecting both its artistic and commercial success.

Hollywood Remake of Korean Classic Also Recognized

Adding to the Korean connection is the presence of ‘Bugonia,’ a Hollywood remake of the beloved Korean film ‘Save the Green Planet!’ ‘Bugonia’ also secured three nominations in the Musical or Comedy categories: Best Motion Picture, Best Actress (Emma Stone), and Best Actor (Jesse Plemons).

These nominations collectively signal that Korean cinematic narratives, whether through original works like ‘No Choice,’ K-content animations like ‘KDH,’ or the inspiration for major Hollywood remakes, are fundamentally shaping the landscape of global popular culture. The upcoming Golden Globe Awards is set to be a significant event demonstrating the sustained, powerful influence of Korean creative industries.
