Chungnam Province has successfully promoted two major upcoming international events that will shine brightly in 2027: the 1st Island Biennale and the Nonsan Strawberry Expo.

On May 11, the province announced that it raised expectations for these representative international events through a street parade during the opening ceremony of the 21st National City and Provincial Public Officials Friendship Sports Festival, held at the Local Government Officials Development Institute in Jeollabuk-do.

This street parade was designed to inform public officials from cities and provinces nationwide about the upcoming international events and to introduce the province's key visions for culture, tourism, and industry. On this day, provincial government employees showcased a vibrant performance using large banners wishing for the successful hosting of the 2027 1st Island Biennale and the 2027 Nonsan Strawberry Expo, along with umbrellas symbolizing the strawberry expo. This unique performance captured the attention of on-site participants and successfully engraved Chungnam's future value nationwide.

Among the international events scheduled for next year, the 2027 1st Island Biennale will take place for 58 days from April 3 to May 30 around Wonsando and Godaedo islands. Hosted by Chungnam Province and Boryeong City and organized by the Island Biennale Organizing Committee, the exhibition is themed "Moving Island; Crossing the Event Horizon." Approximately 70 artists and teams from 24 countries will participate, combining indoor exhibitions at the main exhibition hall with outdoor exhibitions utilizing empty houses, idle spaces, sandy beaches, and coastal roads, with a target of attracting 270,000 visitors. The main exhibition hall, the "Island Culture and Arts Platform" at Wonsando Beach, is scheduled for completion in December.

The 2027 Nonsan Strawberry Expo is scheduled to be held for 24 days from February 26 to March 21 around the Nonsan Civic Family Park. During this period, the province plans to present the vision of South Korea's strawberry industry and showcase the appeal of K-strawberries leaping onto the global stage.

A provincial official stated, "It is meaningful to promote Chungnam's representative future visions, the Island Biennale and the Nonsan Strawberry Expo, at a venue of harmony called the National City and Provincial Public Officials Friendship Sports Festival. We will continue promotional activities to highlight the charm of Chungnam's representative events and heat up the enthusiasm for a successful hosting."

Meanwhile, this year's National City and Provincial Public Officials Sports Festival, hosted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and Jeollabuk-do, runs for three days from the 10th to the 12th, with approximately 2,300 participants competing in nine events including soccer.

Building upon the promotional momentum at the national sports festival, the 2027 1st Island Biennale and the 2027 Nonsan Strawberry Expo represent strategic cornerstones in Chungnam’s broader blueprint to elevate its regional economy, cultural soft power, and global tourism footprint. By utilizing the natural topography and maritime environment of Wonsando and Godaedo, the event breaks away from traditional indoor white-cube galleries. Artists will interact directly with local fishing communities, repurposed vernacular architecture, and coastal landscapes, prompting deep aesthetic reflections on island ecology, human migration, and connectivity in the modern era. The completion of the Island Culture and Arts Platform in December will serve as a permanent cultural anchor, ensuring that the Biennale leaves a lasting infrastructural legacy for Boryeong City and the wider Chungnam coastline.

Simultaneously, the Nonsan Strawberry Expo elevates an already thriving local agricultural festival into a certified global exposition. Nonsan has long stood as a powerhouse in strawberry cultivation, renowned for its advanced smart-farm technologies, superior sweetness, and export-driven agricultural logistics. The 2027 expo aims to synthesize these achievements by inviting international buyers, agricultural experts, and tourists to experience cutting-edge horticulture, eco-friendly farming innovations, and diverse culinary cultures centered around K-strawberries. By integrating interactive family experiences at the Civic Family Park with global academic symposiums on smart agriculture, the expo seeks to cement South Korea's status as a leader in high-tech farming and agricultural export diversification.

Through these concerted outreach efforts—ranging from nationwide parades targeting public sector leaders to high-impact international marketing—Chungnam Province is actively transforming its regional vision into a nationwide movement. As the countdown to 2027 continues, these two mega-events promise to redefine the province's identity, driving sustainable tourism, bolstering rural economies, and projecting the vibrant cultural and industrial dynamism of Chungnam onto the global stage.
