Samsung Electronics has forged a strategic partnership with French artificial intelligence pioneer Mistral AI to jointly develop proprietary AI models tailored specifically for semiconductor design and manufacturing.
Announced during a bilateral summit between South Korea and France, the collaboration combines Samsung’s extensive Device Solutions (DS) division data—encompassing advanced semiconductor technology and manufacturing operations—with Mistral AI’s high-efficiency large language model (LLM) technologies. The ultimate goal is to dramatically elevate productivity, precision, and efficiency across the entire semiconductor lifecycle.
As part of this comprehensive partnership, Samsung Electronics spearheaded a landmark Series D funding round for Mistral AI. Mistral secured €3 billion (approximately $3.5 billion), pushing its post-money valuation past €21 billion. This milestone marks the largest equity financing round ever completed by a European technology company, achieved just three years after its founding. The investment round was led by Samsung, alongside co-leads Scaleup Europe Fund (managed by EQT) and existing investor PSG Equity, with participation from other global tech giants and financial institutions.
Customized AI for Semiconductor Engineering
Leveraging Mistral AI’s advanced suite of models, including the high-performance 'Mistral Large', Samsung will engineer bespoke AI models fine-tuned on proprietary internal datasets from its DS division.
These custom AI systems will be phased into critical stages of semiconductor manufacturing and research, including:
Advanced Data Analysis: Processing complex engineering metrics rapidly to accelerate R&D cycles.
Defect Prediction: Identifying microscopic anomalies early in production to safeguard yield rates.
Process Optimization: Fine-tuning lithography and etching workflows to maximize fabrication efficiency and product quality.
Beyond individual AI models, the two companies plan to build a cohesive, semiconductor-optimized AI platform and operational framework.
Strict Data Security via On-Premises Architecture
A cornerstone of this partnership is the deployment of the AI models within Samsung’s internal infrastructure via an on-premises architecture. Because semiconductor design blueprints and manufacturing parameters constitute critical national core technologies, this secure setup ensures that sensitive data remains entirely protected and is never transferred outside Samsung’s secure corporate environment.
Jun Young-hyun, Head of Samsung’s DS Division, emphasized the significance of the agreement, stating, "By joining hands with Mistral AI, we will establish specialized AI models and platforms tailored for the semiconductor industry, setting a new benchmark for AI-driven manufacturing innovation."
With this alliance, Samsung aims to accelerate the AI transformation across all business sectors while fortifying its competitive edge in the global AI semiconductor and memory markets.
