Daejeon, South Korea – Daejeon City announced on [Date] that it will increase the monthly honorarium for war veterans to 200,000 won starting from 2025, reflecting a 50,000 won increase from the current 150,000 won.
The decision follows the revision of the "Daejeon Metropolitan City Support for War Veterans Ordinance" in June. This revision confirmed the provision of a total of 200,000 won per month to 4,950 Korean War and Vietnam War veterans residing in Daejeon, with Daejeon City contributing 120,000 won and the respective districts providing 80,000 won.
Since the inauguration of the 8th administration, the city has been continuously expanding welfare benefits to honor and support national veterans. Notably, in 2023, the honorarium for war veterans was increased from 100,000 won to 150,000 won per month. The further increase to 200,000 won in 2025 marks a twofold increase compared to 2022.
Additionally, to ensure the stable livelihood of spouses of deceased war veterans, the city has been providing a monthly allowance of 80,000 won since 2023, up from the previous 50,000 won.
To accommodate the increased honorarium, Daejeon City has allocated 7.128 billion won in its budget for 2025. The total budget for veterans' benefits, including honoraria for war veterans, spouses, and general welfare benefits, amounts to 13.572 billion won.
Daejeon Mayor Lee Jang-woo stated, "To strengthen respect for war veterans who have contributed and dedicated themselves to our nation and to promote a culture of honoring veterans, we will continue to expand welfare services and support veterans' organizations next year."
