Intense Customer Retention Battle Among South Korea's Top Three Delivery Apps

Moving Beyond Simple Discounts into Point Accumulation, Time Sales, and Loyalty Ecosystems

South Korea’s food delivery giants—Baedal Minjok (Baemin), Coupang Eats, and Yogiyo—are fiercely escalating their customer retention warfare. As the overall growth momentum of the domestic online food delivery market experiences a post-pandemic slowdown compared to its explosive peak years, these platforms are transitioning away from simplistic upfront price cuts toward sophisticated lock-in mechanisms. Their core objective is to maximize customer lifetime value, enhance repeat order frequency, and firmly secure high-value loyal users in an increasingly saturated market environment.

Expansion of Time Sales and Point Accumulation Strategies

Industry sources revealed that Baemin, the market leader controlling roughly 60% of the domestic market share, is progressively expanding its targeted promotional tools. Following the initial rollout of its 'Time Sale' feature in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon last April, the company has broadened the operation to major metropolitan regions including Busan, Daejeon, Gwangju, Daegu, and Ulsan. Time Sales dynamically highlight limited-time discount pop-ups during off-peak ordering hours, designed smoothly to stimulate latent demand and encourage repeat transactions during slower operational periods.

Furthermore, Baemin is revamping its membership ecosystem, 'Baemin Club', to focus heavily on continuous point accumulation. By blending free delivery services, B-Mart grocery discounts, and direct point cash-backs, the platform aims to establish a sticky routine of repetitive ordering. However, financial analysts note that while cash-back points provide immediate utility to consumers, they impose severe cost burdens. Given Baemin’s massive transaction volume, generous point rewards can significantly compress net profit margins despite top-line expansion.

Coupang Eats and Yogiyo: Diverse Counter-Strategies

Meanwhile, Coupang Eats, holding the position of the aggressive industry runner-up, has adjusted its promotional roadmap. Shifting away from universal free delivery for general members, Coupang Eats introduced a transaction-based 'Stamp Event'. Under this system, customers who complete five orders from a specific restaurant earn merchant-configured rewards, such as discount coupons or free menu items. This mechanism directly empowers local independent restaurant owners to cultivate dedicated neighborhood regulars.

Yogiyo, holding a critical competitive stance in third place, has doubled down on its 'Infinite Accumulation' cash-back program launched late last year, complemented by its 'Yogi-Extra-Accumulation' tier providing an additional 5% bonus. To further streamline consumer friction, Yogiyo is preparing to roll out an integrated cart and checkout function within the latter half of the year, enabling users to effortlessly compare prices and execute consolidated payments across multiple culinary vendors.

Market Polarization and the Public Delivery App Debate

Market research data indicates that the domestic food delivery ecosystem is rapidly consolidating into a formidable duopoly anchored by Baemin and Coupang Eats, which together command nearly 90% of combined user traffic. As aggressive marketing and promotional expenditures escalate, smaller competitors face mounting structural pressures. This intense rivalry unfolds concurrently with government-backed initiatives attempting to foster public delivery applications as an alternative to mitigate commission pressures on small-scale merchants.

"The exceptional service quality and technical sophistication of private delivery platforms are the direct result of over a decade of continuous capital investment and heavy accumulated deficits intended to establish sustainable market value," an industry insider remarked. "Publicly funded alternatives, deployed rapidly through government initiatives, often struggle to match the operational reliability, speed, and seamless consumer experience established by private industry leaders."
Ultimately, as the total domestic food delivery transaction volume targets historic highs near 28 trillion KRW, private platforms are compelled to diversify their revenue streams. By branching out into quick commerce, retail grocery delivery, and cross-platform ecosystem integration, these operators are redefining the boundaries of convenience culture in South Korea.
