As the crisp, refreshing breeze of autumn sweeps across the region, Chungbuk Province is once again transforming into a vibrant canvas of arts and culture. Following a successful run through the intense heat of August, the Chungbuk Cultural Foundation (led by CEO Kim Kyung-shik) is revving up its signature regional cultural initiative, "Every Nook and Cranny : UP GO! Let’s Play in Chungbuk," for the month of September.

Designed to bridge the cultural gap for residents living in medically and culturally underserved areas, this expansive program is rolling out across six distinct districts: Danyang, Goesan, Boeun, Okcheon, Yeongdong, and Jincheon. By decentralizing cultural access, the initiative empowers local communities to engage directly with diverse artistic performances, hands-on workshops, and creative education right in their neighborhoods. 

Overcoming the Summer Heat with Health and Sharing

Despite punishing heatwaves throughout August that forced organizers to temporarily pause outdoor events, the program proved resilient. By pivoting swiftly to indoor-centric activities, the initiative successfully drew a total of 1,884 participants during the month. More importantly, August programs uniquely blended arts with community health and philanthropy, creating deeply meaningful local impacts. 

For instance, on August 26 in Danyang, the "Into Daily Life: Visiting Special Program" at Dae-rae Dongsan offered an innovative blend of culture and healthcare. Alongside acoustic guitar and harmonica performances and LED mirror-crafting workshops, residents received comprehensive medical check-ups. Through a collaborative partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the Association of Korean Oriental Medicine Volunteer Corps, professional practitioners provided blood pressure and blood sugar checks, bone density screenings, acupuncture, physical therapy, and personalized herbal consultations. Over 60 local seniors and residents experienced a harmonious fusion of cultural enrichment and vital health care services.

Meanwhile, in Boeun, the August 25 program hosted by the Boeun-gun Family Center featured "Boeun's Kitchen: Cooking Together ASIA." Multicultural instructors guided participants through culinary explorations of different countries, resulting in the preparation of 140 warm meals. Demonstrating how cultural participation can blossom into community solidarity, these meals were delivered directly to local public servants at the Boeun Police Station and Fire Department, bridging cultures while warming the hearts of local frontline workers.

A Rich Mosaic of September Programs Across Six Districts

Building on this momentum, September ushers in a refreshed and expanded calendar. As weather conditions turn favorable, outdoor events return alongside tailored community programs across all six participating regions. 

In Goesan County, residents can enjoy the Goesan Cultural Center’s "Nature Echo Orchestra" and "Art Workshop Mun-nal," alongside the Youth Creative Space Orot's "Your Voice," the Goesan Education Library's sequential book talks with local authors, and the "Night of Reading and Transcription" hosted by the Forest Small Bookstore. Boeun County continues its warm cultural exchanges with ongoing sessions of "Asia Kitchen Together," while Danyang County keeps touring with its customized visiting programs and creative theater workshops.

Okcheon County offers an ambitious lineup featuring an acting class led by veteran actor Ahn Seok-hwan via the local Mice Center, alongside the Okcheon Culture and Arts Center's creative madang-play "Pal-bong Gets Married" and classic silent film screenings. Jincheon County, centered around the Chungbuk Innovation City Complex Innovation Center, hosts programs like public and corporate orchestra showcases, a sapling children’s choir, and family cultural strolls. Yeongdong County leverages its unique regional characteristics through the Rainbow Healing Center’s book therapy and slow-stretching sessions, paired with the Yeongdong Traditional Market’s youth flea markets and vibrant market busking. 

The Return of the Beloved "Star-Gazing Picnic"

Perhaps the most anticipated highlight of the autumn schedule is the grand return of the regional wide-area signature program, the "Star-Gazing Picnic."

Designed to celebrate the transition into optimal outdoor weather, this open-air festival invites families, friends, and neighbors to step away from daily routines and immerse themselves in nature. The picnic series will kick off on October 2 at the lawn plaza in front of the Boeun Lifestyle Culture Center, followed by a two-day run from October 3 to 4 at Sogeunjeong Park in Danyang. Attendees can look forward to an enchanting blend of wellness yoga, magical performances, live jazz concerts, and guided stargazing experiences under the clear autumn night skies.

The initiative reflects the Chungbuk Cultural Foundation’s ongoing commitment to ensuring that no resident is left behind regarding cultural accessibility, regardless of geographic location.

"It is deeply meaningful that local residents maintained steady enthusiasm and participation in arts and culture despite the severe summer heatwaves," noted CEO Kim Kyung-shik.
