The IRONMAN Group, a global organizer of triathlon events, is setting a new milestone in South America. The IRONMAN Group has officially announced its first-ever IRONMAN 70.3 event in Paraguay, signaling a drive to expand the base of triathlon sports within the South American continent.

Dubbed ‘Ueno Bank IRONMAN 70.3 Encarnación,’ this historic event will kick off on Sunday, September 28, 2025, in the beautiful riverside city of Encarnación, located on the northern bank of the Paraná River in southern Paraguay. This announcement follows the successful hosting of Paraguay’s first 5150 Triathlon in Encarnación on April 13th, indicating the IRONMAN Group’s high regard for the Paraguayan market’s growth potential and the fervent passion for sports in the region.

Joanna Jordan, Vice President and Managing Director for Latin America at The IRONMAN Group, expressed her excitement, stating, “We are thrilled to bring the IRONMAN 70.3 Series to Paraguay for the first time.” She emphasized, “The incredible success of the 5150 event in Encarnación was just the beginning. This IRONMAN 70.3 event further solidifies our belief that Paraguay’s support for sports will elevate this city as a hub for world-class sporting events.”

The IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon is an extreme endurance event covering a total of 113 kilometers (70.3 miles), consisting of a 1.9km swim, a 90km bike ride, and a 21.1km run. The Encarnación race course is planned to unfold along the city’s beautiful Costanera (riverside road) and picturesque riverside areas. Participants can look forward to a race that combines technical challenges with the stunning natural scenery of the Paraná River.

The IRONMAN Group anticipates that this new event will significantly contribute to the development of endurance sports in Paraguay and surrounding regions. Furthermore, hosting an international triathlon event is expected to boost tourism and positively impact the local economy. In particular, the Encarnación event will offer qualifying slots for the 2026 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Nice, France, attracting considerable attention from triathlon athletes worldwide.

Paraguay has been actively working to expand its sports infrastructure and attract international sporting events in recent years. Its beautiful natural environment and mild climate provide optimal conditions for various outdoor sports activities, including triathlons. Encarnación, a major city developed along the Paraná River, has been recognized for its scenic beauty and well-maintained roads and accommodation facilities, making it a city with sufficient potential to host international sporting events.

The hosting of the IRONMAN 70.3 Encarnación is expected to be a significant milestone for Paraguay as it aims to become a new hub for triathlon sports in South America. Building on the experience of successfully hosting the 5150 event, close collaboration with the IRONMAN Group will allow Paraguay to accumulate international-level event management expertise and attract more domestic and international athletes. This is expected to not only enhance Paraguay’s sporting prestige but also significantly contribute to the revitalization of the local economy.

The IRONMAN Group’s strategy to expand its presence in the South American market is expected to accelerate further with this event in Paraguay. By connecting with neighboring countries such as Brazil, Argentina, and Chile, where triathlon sports are already thriving, the aim is to strengthen the overall South American triathlon community and provide more athletes with opportunities to participate in international events.

The participation of Ueno Bank as the title sponsor for this event is also noteworthy. The active support of a local financial institution will not only be a crucial driving force for the successful hosting of the event but also present a positive model for contributing to sports development through organic cooperation with the local community.

The IRONMAN 70.3 Encarnación event is expected to serve as an important promotional platform, showcasing Paraguay’s beautiful nature and culture to the world, beyond just being a sporting event. The numerous athletes participating in the event, along with their families and spectators, will directly experience the charm of Encarnación and develop a positive perception of Paraguay.

The provision of qualifying slots for the 2026 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Nice is another significant attraction of the Encarnación event. Elite triathletes from around the world are expected to participate in this Paraguayan event with the goal of competing in the Nice World Championship, which will elevate the level of competition and foreshadow an even more intense race.

The IRONMAN Group’s entry into Paraguay will be recorded as a significant event that opens a new chapter for triathlon sports in South America. Through the new host city of Encarnación, IRONMAN is expected to provide participation opportunities to a more diverse range of athletes and contribute to the expansion of diversity within the global triathlon community. With the active support of the Paraguayan government and local community, the successful hosting of the IRONMAN 70.3 Encarnación event will be closely watched to see if Paraguay can grow into a leading hub for triathlon sports in South America.
