The Chungcheongnam-do Provincial Council is pushing for the enactment of an ordinance to encourage book donations from citizens and to distribute books to individuals, institutions, and organizations in need, thereby expanding the sharing of knowledge resources.

The Provincial Council announced on the 1st that it had pre-announced the 'Ordinance on Promoting Book Donations to Libraries under the Chungcheongnam-do Office of Education,' which was proposed by Assemblyman Yoo Seong-jae (Cheonan 5th Constituency, People Power Party).

Currently, the Chungnam Provincial Office of Education operates 19 libraries. As of 2024, the proportion of books donated by individuals, institutions, and organizations stands at a very low level of 0.18%, while books donated by libraries to individuals, institutions, and organizations account for 1.36%.

The proposed ordinance outlines the Superintendent's responsibilities for promoting book donations to libraries operated by the Chungnam Provincial Office of Education, as well as details on book donation methods, eligible donated books, and the promotion of donations.

Assemblyman Yoo emphasized, "Active and continuous efforts by libraries are needed, such as increasing library resources through book donations and exploring cooperative measures with institutions and organizations to donate surplus books, including unused books, to those in need."

Meanwhile, this ordinance is scheduled to be deliberated at the 358th extraordinary session of the Provincial Council, which will convene on April 8th.
