Figueredo Re-elected to Lead Paraguayan Lutheran Church Amidst Challenges

LOMA PLATA, Chaco, Paraguay – The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Paraguay (IELP) has reaffirmed its leadership by re-electing Pastor Alceu Alton Figueredo as its president for another three-year term. The decision was made during the church's 43rd General Convention held in Loma Plata from March 8th to 9th. The convention, centered around the theme of "Guidance" drawn from Romans 8:14, saw delegates from across Paraguay gather to conduct church business and celebrate their shared faith.

President Figueredo, who was first elected in 2022, expressed his gratitude and acknowledged the significant challenges facing the church in the modern era. "It is a privilege and a great honor to be re-elected," he stated, while also highlighting concerns about the erosion of family values, the sanctity of marriage, and attacks on Christian principles. Despite these challenges, he affirmed the church's strength, noting the presence of pastors in every parish and the ongoing commitment to nationwide missions, attributing this to "great blessings from God." He emphasized the importance of the convention's theme, "Guidance," as the church strives to lead its members with God's grace and love.

The convention was attended by leaders and members of the IELP and also saw congratulatory messages from international partners. Rev. Klaus Detlev Schulz, General Secretary of the International Lutheran Council (ILC), of which the IELP is a member, extended his best wishes to President Figueredo, recognizing his service both within Paraguay and on the ILC Board of Directors.

Beyond the presidential re-election, the General Convention also involved elections for various other church positions. A significant highlight of the event was the dedication of the new Central Chaco Lutheran Mission Church in Loma Plata. This new mission is a testament to the IELP's ongoing commitment to outreach, with President Figueredo himself serving the congregation despite the 500-kilometer distance from his home in Asunción, where he also pastors Christ the King Lutheran Church.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Paraguay is a confessional Lutheran church deeply rooted in the Bible and the Lutheran Confessions. As a member of the International Lutheran Council, it stands in fellowship with Lutheran churches worldwide that share this commitment to proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ. President Figueredo's re-election signals a continuation of this commitment and a focus on navigating the complexities of the contemporary world while remaining steadfast in their faith.
