Memory Boom Drives Samsung Electronics to Record $65 Billion Q2 Profit, Offsetting Heavy Set Losses

SEOUL — Driven by unprecedented global demand for artificial intelligence hardware, Samsung Electronics Co. achieved record-breaking financial results for the second quarter of 2026. The South Korean tech giant posted a consolidated operating profit of 89.49 trillion won (approximately $65 billion), marking an extraordinary 1,813.8% increase from the same period last year and a 56.4% jump from the previous quarter. Total revenue for the quarter rose 130% year-over-year to a record 171.5 trillion won.

Earnings per share surged 52% quarter-over-quarter to 10,849 won for both common and preferred stock, positioning Samsung at the apex of global technology firms in terms of quarterly profitability. A strong U.S. dollar further bolstered operations, generating a positive currency effect of roughly 3.1 trillion won, primarily benefiting the component sector. Despite macroeconomic fluctuations, the company poured a record 16 trillion won into research and development to solidify its technical lead.

Semiconductor Dominance and the AI Horizon

The star performer of the quarter was undeniably the Device Solutions (DS) division, which encompasses memory chips, system integration, and foundry operations. The DS division recorded 127.5 trillion won in revenue and a jaw-dropping 89.2 trillion won in operating profit, achieving an enviable operating margin of 70%.

The surge was spearheaded by high-density memory chips tailored for agentic AI architectures and hyperscale server infrastructure. Samsung expanded shipments of its 6th-generation High Bandwidth Memory (HBM4) and successfully sampled HBM4E to key global clients, establishing a firm footing against competitors. Market analysts estimate Samsung's memory-specific operating margin reached near 75%, matching rival SK Hynix in profitability.

Beyond standard DRAM and NAND flash, the System LSI division set a half-year sales record, propelled by robust demand for flagship mobile System-on-Chips (SoCs) and high-resolution image sensors. Meanwhile, the Foundry business saw improved revenue performance due to surging demand for HBM base dies and orders from major North American clients.

Component Costs Weigh Heavy on Set Operations

In stark contrast to the semiconductor division's historic high, Samsung's consumer-facing Device Experience (DX) division turned in an operating loss of 800 billion won on revenue of 48 trillion won. The shortfall highlights the double-edged sword of the semiconductor boom: skyrocketed memory prices heavily squeezed profit margins for finished device manufacturers, including Samsung's own mobile and home appliance divisions.

The Mobile eXperience (MX) unit reported an operating loss of 700 billion won. While sales of the flagship Galaxy S26 series and entry-level A-series remained steady, steep component inflation tore into operating margins. Similarly, the Visual Display (VD) and Digital Appliances (DA) divisions logged a combined loss of 100 billion won as rising material and shipping costs erased gains made from summer air conditioner sales and major sporting event TV promotions.

Among non-semiconductor units, Harman International stood out as a bright spot, posting 4.6 trillion won in revenue and 400 billion won in operating profit, driven by strong automotive electronics growth and personal audio sales. Samsung Display also performed solidly, generating 7.5 trillion won in revenue and 700 billion won in operating profit on resilient mobile screen demand and expanding gaming monitor sales.

Strategic Outlook for H2 2026

Looking ahead to the second half of 2026, Samsung expects overall corporate momentum to continue as the global AI cycle gathers speed. The semiconductor division plans to reinforce its market leadership by mass-producing HBM4E, DDR5, LPDDR5-based CAMM2 modules, and enterprise SSDs (eSSD). The foundry business will officially start mass production on its 2-nanometer second-generation mobile process while targeting custom SoC contracts and high-performance computing acquisitions.

For the DX division, Samsung aims to restore profitability through premium product diversification. The mobile team will focus on high-margin devices, including the Galaxy S26 Ultra and the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold8 series, while the appliances and display units plan to lean heavily on AI-integrated software features and strategic holiday promotions to offset ongoing cost pressures.
