Facebook Aims to Reconnect with Users, Especially Gen Z, Through Revamped 'Friends Tab'

Social media giant Meta is rolling out a new 'Friends Tab' in a bid to prioritize genuine connections and win back younger users who have flocked to rival platforms.

Menlo Park, CA – March 27, 2025 – Facebook, the once-dominant social networking platform, is taking significant steps to refocus its user experience on fostering closer relationships between friends. The company announced the launch of its new 'Friends Tab,' a dedicated space designed to showcase content exclusively from a user's network of friends. This move signals a return to Facebook's foundational principles and an attempt to recapture the attention of a younger demographic increasingly drawn to platforms like TikTok and Snapchat.

The newly introduced 'Friends Tab,' currently being rolled out in the United States and Canada, offers a streamlined feed that displays posts, Reels (short-form videos), birthday reminders, and other updates solely from a user's confirmed friends. Notably absent from this dedicated space are the algorithmic recommendations and advertisements that have become a prominent feature of the main Facebook feed in recent years.

This strategic shift aligns with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg's declaration earlier this year about a renewed focus on the "original Facebook." In January, Zuckerberg emphasized the company's commitment to prioritizing person-to-person connections, acknowledging that the platform's evolution with the addition of features like Marketplace had somewhat diluted its initial purpose. He pledged that significant changes aimed at this return to core values would begin within the first half of the year.

The introduction of the 'Friends Tab' is widely seen as a direct response to the declining popularity of Facebook among younger users. Data indicates a significant drop in Facebook usage among teenagers in the United States, plummeting from 71% in 2014 to a mere 32% in 2024. This exodus of younger users to visually-driven platforms like TikTok and ephemeral messaging apps like Snapchat has prompted Meta to re-evaluate its strategy.
