Design Miami Seoul 2026: Blurring the Lines Between Art and Furniture

Design Miami Seoul 2026, held at the iconic Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP), is set to open its doors on September 1st, marking the event's second year with a significantly expanded scope and ambition.

Is it art, or is it furniture? This is the central question posed by the unique pieces on display at this year’s "Design Miami Seoul." As the fair evolves from a localized designer showcase into a global hub for collectible design, it invites collectors, industry leaders, and design enthusiasts to reconsider the boundaries between functional objects and fine art.

An Upgraded Platform for Global Exchange

Following its successful debut last year, Design Miami Seoul 2026 has grown into a comprehensive collectible design fair. The event, which runs from September 1st to 6th (with a VIP preview on August 31st), serves as a bridge connecting global galleries, visionary designers, and collectors. Seoul has firmly established itself as a pivotal node in the global design calendar, with the fair’s schedule perfectly aligning with other major artistic events like Frieze Seoul and Kiaf.

"Design Miami Seoul 2026" is organized under the theme "Resonance: Design in Dialogue." This theme explores how design acts as a medium for connecting memories, knowledge, and emotions across time, space, and cultures. Under the curatorial direction of Hyeyoung Cho, the fair features an array of programs housed within the DDP Design Lab.

Expanded Programming: From Galleries to Industry Partnerships

This year, the fair has diversified its offerings through three main pillars:

Gallery Program: Six world-renowned design galleries will showcase curated presentations that blend historical significance with contemporary aesthetics. From the bronze and wood works of London’s Charles Burnand Gallery to the sculptural furniture pieces from New York’s Baróg-e-hi, the galleries offer an intimate look at the craftsmanship, rarity, and conceptual depth that define "collectible design"—functional objects created with the intentionality of fine art.
In Situ Program: This popular feature has expanded beyond Korean borders to include talent from across Asia. Featuring 36 designers and studios—including Korean artists like Kwon Joong-mo and international talents like Yuki Nara—the program highlights how modern technology, such as 3D printing, integrates with traditional crafts like Hanji (Korean traditional paper) and lacquerware.
Partner Programs: Design Miami Seoul continues to broaden the intersection of design and industry. Lead partner Samsung Electronics is presenting a collaboration that fuses Korean art with their OLED TV frames, while other partners like Alloso, Taeyoang Studio, and Loewe Foundation explore the resonance between tradition and contemporary urban life.

The Rise of Collectible Design

Collectible design, often referred to as "functional art," has become a major focus for global art collectors. Unlike mass-produced furniture, these limited-edition or one-of-a-kind pieces are valued for their provenance, authorship, and the narrative tied to the designer’s creative vision.

The fair’s "Design Talks," scheduled for September 3rd, will bring together leading voices—including designers, brands, and collectors—to discuss the shifting landscape of this market. As Asia’s influence on the global design stage grows, these conversations will be vital in shaping the future of how we experience, collect, and value design.

Jen Roberts, CEO of Design Miami, noted that the success of the inaugural Seoul event provided a powerful momentum for this year's growth. By occupying a larger space at the DDP and fostering deeper dialogue between regional and international audiences, Design Miami Seoul 2026 is poised to solidify Seoul’s reputation as a top-tier destination for the global art and design community.

For those attending, the fair offers more than just an exhibition; it is an immersive experience where the domestic and the sculptural meet, proving that design is not just a tool for living, but a profound expression of our human story.
