KATHMANDU – Sirijunga Rural Municipality of Taplejung has announced an adventure half marathon to be held at the base camp of Mount Kanchenjunga, the world’s third-highest peak. The event is scheduled for April 26-28, 2025, coinciding with the Sirijunga Festival-2025.

The marathon will take place at an altitude of 4,500 meters above sea level, offering participants a unique and challenging experience amidst breathtaking Himalayan scenery.

Dr. Chitra Mabo, Vice-Chair of Sirijunga Rural Municipality, revealed the attractive cash prizes awaiting the winners. The champion will receive Rs 208,586, the first runner-up Rs 108,586, and the second runner-up Rs 85,586.

The 24-kilometer course will begin at New Jhoreni and traverse a scenic route through several key locations, including Kasturedanda, Jhandedanda, Sindure Waya, Tuplung, Dundudanda, Dhaun Chowk, and Bhedi Chowk, culminating at Machhewa.

Beyond the marathon, the festival will also feature a mountain cycling event, adding to the adventurous atmosphere.

Organizers have stated that the primary goals of this event are twofold: first, to promote adventure tourism in the region, and second, to conduct research on the impact of climate change in this sensitive mountainous environment. The event will also serve as an opportunity to monitor and assess the condition of adventure trekking routes in the area. The municipality hopes this event will draw international attention to the region and contribute to both tourism and scientific understanding.
