Cheonan City announced that it was awarded an institutional commendation from the Minister of Environment for its contributions to biodiversity at the '2025 Biodiversity Day and Wetlands Day Commemorative Event' held on May 22nd at the National Sejong Arboretum.
This commendation was presented to organizations and individuals who have contributed to national policies, including biodiversity conservation and the protection and management of biological resources. Cheonan City earned this honor in recognition of its efforts to promote biodiversity.
The city has proclaimed its vision of '2030 Environmentally Safe City Cheonan' and has been dedicated to protecting endangered species, such as establishing a habitat for the endangered plant Euryale ferox within the Sameun Reservoir, and laying the groundwork for ecosystem services.
Furthermore, the city has created eco-friendly spaces like the Seongseong Lake Park ecological trail and eco-bridge, conducts citizen-participatory ecological education annually, and continuously promotes various ecological conservation activities, including native fish fry release projects, earning recognition for its contributions to biodiversity enhancement.
Kim Seok-pil, Acting Mayor of Cheonan, stated, "We will continue to do our best to ensure citizens can enjoy rich ecosystem services even in urban areas through biodiversity conservation and the protection and management of biological resources."
