Boxing World Mourns the Early Passing of Promising Talent Georgia O'Connor

Sad news has emerged from the boxing world: Georgia O'Connor, a rising star in British boxing, has passed away at the young age of 25 after a courageous battle with a rare and aggressive form of cancer. Despite receiving extensive support and encouragement from the boxing community during her recent hospitalization, O'Connor tragically did not win this fight. Her sudden death has plunged boxing fans and officials into deep sorrow.

A Brief but Intense Boxing Career

Georgia O'Connor built a short but successful boxing career. After making her professional debut in 2021, she achieved an undefeated record of 3 wins and 0 losses by securing victories against Ester Konecna, Erica Juana Gabriela Álvarez, and Joyce Van. Her last professional bout took place in October 2022 at the O2 Arena in London, where she competed against Joyce Van Ee in a women's boxing match. Although her professional career was brief, her exceptional potential and talent were enough to garner high expectations from the boxing world.

Before turning professional, O'Connor shone brightly in her amateur career. She excelled at the junior level, winning numerous medals, and boasted an illustrious amateur record that included five-time England National Champion, Commonwealth Champion, and two-time World and European Champion. She earned a gold medal at the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games, a silver medal at the 2017 Youth World Championships, and a bronze medal at the 2018 Youth World Championships, gaining international recognition for her skills. Beyond boxing, she was a versatile athlete, also being a three-time National Taekwondo Champion and holding an undefeated record in kickboxing.

A Fight Against Rare Cancer and a Will to Live

O'Connor had been battling ulcerative colitis since 2023, and in January 2025, she was diagnosed with aggressive rare cancer. She bravely shared her struggles with the public, maintaining a strong will to live and a positive attitude despite her painful circumstances. Notably, even after experiencing a pregnancy and miscarriage before her cancer diagnosis, she expressed, "I still feel on top of the world!" Her unwavering spirit touched many hearts.

O'Connor spent a brief but happy time with her long-time boyfriend, Adriano Cardinali, whom she married on May 9. She expressed deep affection for her husband on social media, stating, "From the moment I was diagnosed with cancer, Adriano didn't hesitate. He selflessly quit his job and made it his mission to join me in this fight. Not just by my side, but he tirelessly researched day and night and found every possible method to ensure I had every chance to win this." She displayed immense courage by realizing the preciousness of life and pursuing happiness with her loved ones, even amidst her battle with cancer.

Deep Condolences and Tributes from the Boxing Community

The World Boxing Council (WBC) and its President, Mauricio Sulaimán, expressed their profound condolences on O'Connor's passing and extended messages of sympathy to her family and friends. Her promoter, Boxxer, also released a statement, conveying their sorrow: "We are heartbroken by the passing of Georgia O'Connor. A true warrior inside and outside the ring, she was a talented, brave, and resilient young woman. The boxing world has lost her too soon." England Boxing also paid tribute to her achievements, stating, "A talented boxer and a much-loved member of the amateur boxing community, she won medals at the Commonwealth Youth Games, Youth World Championships, and European Championships."

Georgia O'Connor inspired many not only with her boxing prowess but also with her strong mental fortitude and positive outlook on life. Although her life was short, her courage and passion will be forever remembered in the hearts of the boxing community and countless individuals.
