North Korea’s Kim Yo-jong Rejects Seoul's Dialogue Offer, Calling It 'Delusional Nonsense'

SEOUL — North Korea has delivered a blunt and defiant rebuff to South Korea’s latest overtures for dialogue, shutting down any prospects for resuming cross-border communication. Kim Yo-jong, the powerful deputy department director of the Workers' Party of Korea and sister of leader Kim Jong Un, dismissed Seoul's call for talks as "delusional nonsense".

The fiery rejection came late Thursday following statements from South Korea's Unification Minister Chung Dong-young, who cut short an official trip to Europe to address escalating security tensions. Minister Chung had earlier suggested that Seoul, Pyongyang, and the United Nations Command needed to sit down and jointly verify and measure the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) to uncover the root causes behind a recent landmine explosion inside the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).

Chung emphasized that the two sides needed to step away from a cycle of confrontation, stating that communication regarding the exact delineation of the border was critical to preventing further tragedies. He also called for restraint, warning that reviving cross-border loudspeaker broadcasts would be a perilous move.

However, according to the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim vehemently rejected the proposal during a briefing with the Ministry of National Defense’s General Bureau for External Military Affairs.

"What the South Korean official proposed is not even worth responding to; it is nothing more than a delusion and a one-sided rant," Kim said, as reported by KCNA.

In her statement, Kim drew a rigid line regarding national sovereignty and territorial borders. "The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea will never discuss matters of military sovereignty with a hostile country under any circumstances," she asserted. She further declared that national borders are not determined through bilateral negotiations or talks, but rather through the exercise of sovereign rights and "strength."

Reiterating Pyongyang's hardline stance on severing all inter-Korean ties, Kim stated that her government would not allow any spatial or political room for contact between the two Koreas. "Facing South Korea itself is a nightmare, a conclusion drawn from our past bitter experiences," she remarked.

Kim also ridiculed Seoul's demand for an official apology over the DMZ landmine incident, dismissing the request as absurd. She targeted South Korean President Lee Jae-myung’s recent administration policies and National Liberation Day messaging, characterizing them as a "self-staged theatrical drama" designed to deflect responsibility.

Concluding her remarks with a stern warning, Kim noted that regardless of what course of action or future steps the South Korean government decides to take, Pyongyang remains fully prepared for every possible scenario.

The latest sharp exchange highlights the deepening deadlock on the Korean Peninsula, as Seoul's efforts to revive communication channels continue to run into an unyielding wall of hostility from Pyongyang.
