G7 Agrees to Release 100 Million Barrels of Strategic Reserves to Tame Surging Fuel Prices

PARIS — In an urgent coordinated effort to combat soaring global energy costs, the Group of Seven (G7) industrialized nations agreed on Friday to release a total of 100 million barrels of strategic crude oil and diesel reserves.

The decision came following an emergency virtual meeting hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron, triggered by intense pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump over severe diesel supply tightening.

Coordinated Release and Timeline

According to a joint statement released after the meeting, the 4-month drawdown will be coordinated through the International Energy Agency (IEA). The initiative is specifically structured to alleviate acute strains in the refined product market, with a substantial volume of diesel front-loaded during the initial 20 days.

The G7 framework combines a major release of European diesel stocks with broader IEA member contributions of crude oil. Beyond tapping emergency stockpiles, member states pledged to optimize refinery maintenance schedules and maximize operational flexibility to boost production.

Averting Trade Restrictions

A core component of the agreement addresses anxieties surrounding potential trade barriers. European nations entered the discussions seeking firm guarantees that Washington would not unilaterally block refined product exports.

The Trump administration had previously weighed restricting U.S. diesel exports—citing high domestic prices where retail costs surged past $6.50 a gallon—unless European allies rapidly tapped their reserves.

During the summit, G7 leaders reaffirmed their commitment to refrain from imposing export restrictions on energy products among partner nations. Macron confirmed during a press briefing that all participants, including the United States, agreed to maintain open trade channels.

Global Market Impact and Reactions

Energy markets have faced compounding pressures following geopolitical tensions and ongoing conflicts. With Europe heavily reliant on external fuel imports, avoiding a U.S. export ban was viewed as critical to preventing widespread industrial disruption.

President Trump took to social media following the announcement to welcome the consensus, noting that Europe had agreed to execute a massive release of diesel reserves immediately. Meanwhile, G7 officials emphasized that they will continue to monitor global market dynamics closely, remaining prepared to deploy further stabilization measures if price volatility persists.
