Gyeongsangbuk-do successfully hosted the "Junction X Korea 2026" hackathon from August 21 to 23 at the Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) Indoor Gymnasium, drawing approximately 250 global planners, developers, and designers from various countries including the United States, Algeria, Mongolia, India, and the Philippines.

A hackathon is a portmanteau of "hacking" and "marathon," representing a technical competition where participants form teams over a set period to transform innovative ideas into actual working services or programs.

Hosted by Gyeongsangbuk-do and organized by POSTECH, this year's event ran under the slogan "Hack our origin." It was designed as a global tech hackathon aimed at breaking away from conventional thinking, re-examining the true essence of problems, and discovering novel solutions through advanced technology.

Major AI industry leaders participated as track-issuing partners, including Microsoft Korea, Upstage, FuriosaAI, and Lablup. Key figures also attended to support the participants, including Yang Geum-hee, Vice Governor for Economic Affairs of Gyeongsangbuk-do; Jung Sook-kyung, member of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Provincial Council; Kim Sung-keun, President of POSTECH; and Antti Niemelä, Chargé d’Affaires ad interim of the Embassy of Finland in Korea.

Originating from the Aalto Entrepreneurship Society at Aalto University in Finland, Junction has grown into a prestigious global tech hackathon held in over 25 countries across 12 years. Following successful events in Gyeongju in 2024 and Pohang in 2025, Gyeongsangbuk-do hosted this major global innovation festival for the third consecutive year.

The core challenge assigned by Gyeongsangbuk-do for this year's event was "independently identifying and resolving issues faced by Gyeongsangbuk-do using public data assets." Participants leveraged open datasets provided by the government and local authorities—such as the Open Data Portal—to pinpoint regional bottlenecks in demographics, healthcare, social welfare, and disaster management. They subsequently built artificial intelligence-powered services and practical frameworks to address them.

Rather than stopping at raw data analysis, participants were tasked with building functional prototypes such as chatbots, web services, and APIs, emphasizing how open public information can tangibly resolve community issues. To ensure long-term impact, outstanding projects are designed to remain sustainable and expandable through open-source licenses, laying the groundwork for hackathon outcomes to be directly implemented into actual regional administration and public policy.

Following intensive on-site presentations and evaluations, winners were selected across various tracks. The grand prize was awarded to the "Demo Day Care" team, which successfully implemented a reproducible multi-agent execution information verification system.

In the dedicated Gyeongsangbuk-do track, the "Unbland" team secured first place by introducing a regionally specialized AI civil service telephone system. This service recognizes local dialects and accents, allowing citizens to interact comfortably in familiar local speech while seamlessly routing inquiries to the appropriate municipal departments.

The ultimate grand prize winners were awarded prize money, a prestigious provincial governor’s citation, and an exclusive ticket to compete in the upcoming global Junction main event in Finland.

Moving forward, Gyeongsangbuk-do plans to strengthen cooperation with relevant institutions and corporations to ensure that these promising prototypes evolve into commercial services and viable businesses. The province aims to bridge the gap between global hackathon innovations and local economic revitalization, turning cutting-edge technologies into drivers for startup growth and industrial innovation.
