Asunción, Paraguay – Paraguay is facing a crisis of gender-based violence, with a staggering number of women being murdered this year. According to data from the Paraguayan Attorney General's Office, 27 women have been killed in femicide cases in 2024, resulting in 26 ongoing legal proceedings.

A Growing Crisis

The data reveals a disturbing trend, with cases of femicide occurring throughout the country. Central Paraguay has reported the highest number of cases with 10, followed by Alto Paraná with 5. Victims ranged in age from 14 to 73, while perpetrators were between 18 and 73 years old.

A particularly heartbreaking consequence of these crimes is the number of children left orphaned. At least 58 children have lost their mothers due to femicide in 2024. Additionally, 40 women survived attempted murder attempts.

A Complex Issue

The relationships between victims and perpetrators often involved intimate partners, with 15 cases involving spouses and 9 involving former spouses. In some cases, the perpetrators were fathers or individuals unknown to the victims.

Despite court orders such as restraining orders and house arrest, some perpetrators have continued to commit violence, highlighting the urgent need for more effective protective measures.

The alarming rise in femicide cases in Paraguay has sparked widespread concern and calls for immediate action. Experts and advocates are urging the government to implement comprehensive measures to prevent gender-based violence and support survivors.
