YEOSU, South Korea — Across an expansive 180,000-square-meter main venue in the Dolsan Jinmo district, the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo has opened its gates, transforming the southern coastal hub into a global crossroads of island cultures, ecologies, and future industries. Running for 61 days under the grand theme “Islands, Connecting the Ocean and the Future,” the international exposition features eight distinct exhibition zones, including the Theme Pavilion, Marine Ecology Pavilion, Future Pavilion, Culture Pavilion, Treasure Pavilion, and the exceptionally popular International Exchange Island. Among these, the International Exchange Island has rapidly emerged as a crowd favorite, drawing immense numbers of visitors eager to embark on a simulated global voyage without ever leaving Yeosu.

A Global Mosaic: From Galapagos Nature to Santorini Vistas

Stepping into the International Exchange Island feels like holding the entire world in the palm of your hand. Thirty overseas local governments and three international organizations have converged here to showcase the distinct cultural heritage, natural wonders, and tourism assets of remote global archipelagos. Prominent destinations such as the Galapagos Islands, Santorini, Hawaii, Palau, Tahiti, and the Maldives—names that instantly evoke wanderlust—take center stage to present their unique identities. 

Visitors are treated to a kaleidoscopic educational journey: the pristine evolutionary landscapes of Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands, the intricate traditional textile weaving of Peru’s Taquile Island, the iconic whitewashed architecture and azure marine vistas of Greece’s Ionian and Santorini islands, and the rich Swahili heritage of Kenya’s Lamu Island. Beyond mere sightseeing, the exhibition curates a thoughtful discourse on the shared challenges facing island communities worldwide. Interactive displays and expert presentations address critical contemporary issues such as marine ecosystem preservation, tourism innovation, and robust climate change adaptation strategies, urging global citizens to ponder the sustainable future of island ecosystems.

Dynamic Rotations and Domestic Charms

To ensure that repeat visitors continue to experience fresh perspectives, the overseas local government pavilions operate on a rotational schedule. The first and second phases run from September 5 to October 5, while the third phase spans from October 7 to November 4, introducing entirely new participating regions and dynamic content for autumn travelers.

The domestic pavilion section balances the international allure by spotlighting the rich maritime culture of Korea's own islands. Jeju, Incheon, Yeosu, and Gyeongsangnam-do anchor the initial displays, with Busan and Ulleung-gun slated to join in subsequent rotations. Furthermore, dedicated public institution exhibits and fishery export industry pavilions provide a comprehensive look into cutting-edge island policies, marine research, and localized industrial products, bridging the gap between leisurely travel and regional economic development. 

Immersive Encounters: Music, Crafts, and Expert Talks

The expo extends far beyond traditional visual exhibits, offering sensory-rich programs that allow attendees to actively listen, touch, and engage with global island cultures. At the International Exchange Island conference room, a specialized lecture series titled "How About This Island?" features seasoned island coordinators sharing insider travel tips and hidden coastal routes.

Hands-on souvenir workshops have also captured the imagination of families and solo travelers alike. Participants can paint custom designs inspired by marine life and ocean waves, compressing the materials into personalized keychains to commemorate their journey. Meanwhile, the outdoor open stage comes alive during the "Island Friends Days" event series, where traditional performances—ranging from Indonesia’s Trenggalek dance troupes and Ecuadorian Galapagos musical showcases to traditional Peruvian Taquile performances—resonate across the venue, offering a vibrant auditory celebration of global diversity.

Expanding the Horizon: Beyond the Exhibition Halls

Kim Jong-ki, Secretary General of the Expo Organizing Committee, emphasized the multifaceted educational and cultural value of the venue, stating, "The International Exchange Island serves as an intimate space where visitors can directly experience the unique natural environments and cultural tapestries of the world's islands. We hope guests truly appreciate the rich diversity and ecological value of our global village here in Yeosu."

True to its innovative framework, the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo does not confine its scope to indoor pavilions. By integrating sub-venues on actual inhabited islands such as Gaedo and Geumodo—where travelers can hike scenic coastal trails like the famed Bireong Trail or experience authentic local mudflat ecosystems—the expo bridges theoretical sustainability with real-world exploration. It is this seamless fusion of global exhibitions, interactive cultural exchanges, and authentic island journeys that defines the forward-looking paradigm of modern island tourism.
