Hyundai Accelerates Robot Commercialization with the Opening of RMAC at HMGMA

SAVANNAH, Ga. — Hyundai Motor Group’s robotics affiliate, Boston Dynamics, has officially opened the Robotics Metaplant Application Center (RMAC) at the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) in Georgia. This strategic milestone marks a significant leap forward in integrating advanced humanoid robotics into high-volume automotive manufacturing.

The newly inaugurated RMAC facility functions as a cutting-edge testbed and training ground where Boston Dynamics' all-electric humanoid robot, Atlas, can master critical industrial workflows before full-scale deployment on active production floors. Following initial pilot operations that began in June, the center transitioned into full-scale operations, setting the stage for a paradigm shift in physical AI implementation.

Training for Real-World Manufacturing

Inside the RMAC, Atlas is subjected to environmental conditions that faithfully replicate real-world automotive plants. The humanoid robot is currently being trained to execute intricate tasks, such as managing logistics material preparation and performing parts sequencing—the precise sorting and ordering of automotive components to match strict assembly schedules.

Equipped with advanced dexterity, a 360-degree camera suite, and heavy-payload capabilities, Atlas is designed to bridge the gap between traditional automation and human-centric craftsmanship. According to Boston Dynamics, the roadmap for Atlas includes expanding its operational scope toward delicate parts assembly by 2030, followed by broader integration into high-intensity tasks involving repetitive motions and heavy lifting.

Scaling Up: Expansion and Global Deployment

The launch of RMAC is merely the first phase of a broader infrastructural roadmap. Boston Dynamics and Hyundai Motor Group have confirmed plans to construct a separate, dedicated facility within the HMGMA site next year, which will expand the current center's footprint by roughly 10 times.

This rapid expansion supports Hyundai’s aggressive deployment timeline. Over the next few years, the group intends to sequentially introduce approximately 25,000 Atlas units across global manufacturing lines at Hyundai Motor and Kia. Furthermore, to sustain this massive fleet integration, a dedicated U.S. production facility capable of manufacturing 30,000 robots annually is slated for development.

Expanding Beyond Automotive

While automotive manufacturing remains the primary immediate focus, Boston Dynamics is actively laying the groundwork for cross-industry applications. Moving into 2027, the company plans to scale data collection and elevate Atlas' learning models through ongoing consultations with existing enterprise clients utilizing Spot (the quadruped inspection robot) and Stretch (the warehouse automation robot). These prospective sectors include aerospace, semiconductors, logistics, food and beverage, and life sciences.

"RMAC reinforces our shared ambition to create a future where robots amplify human potential by making work safer and more productive," said Zack Jackowski, Chief Product & Technology Officer at Boston Dynamics. By aligning supply chain, production, and testing frameworks under one strategic umbrella, Hyundai Motor Group and Boston Dynamics are successfully transforming theoretical robotics concepts into commercial, enterprise-ready solutions.
