Bucheon City held the ‘2026 Bucheon City Learning Culture Festival’ on the 20th at the Jindallae Hall in Wonmi-gu Office, with about 200 attendees including literacy learners, teachers, and related personnel.
Hosted by the Bucheon City Literacy Education Council, the event was themed “Literacy, a stepping stone to communicate with the world,” and was designed to share the learning achievements accumulated by literacy learners throughout the year and cheer for each other's challenges.
The event opened with a performance by the Chunui Social Welfare Center choir. Following this, learners recited poems they wrote themselves, sharing their thoughts and experiences felt through the process of learning how to read and write.
In particular, an “Online Poetry and Illustration Exhibition” was operated this year, allowing visitors to view over 120 poetry and illustration works by learners online. Attendees used smartphones and other devices to appreciate the works and share the learning and creative achievements of the learners.
Additionally, at this year's Gyeonggi-do Adult Literacy Education Poetry and Illustration Exhibition, 64 Bucheon City learners achieved the feat of winning awards. This learning culture festival served as an opportunity to share the learners' achievements together and boost their confidence in learning.
In the second part of the event, the “Literacy Golden Bell” was held, where learners solved quizzes on what they had learned so far. This was followed by a Nanta performance by the Goriul Literacy Class, creating a time for learners and teachers to mingle together.
The city plans to continue supporting learners to pursue their education by cooperating with local literacy education organizations. In particular, the city intends to expand not only basic literacy education such as reading and writing, but also education necessary for daily life, such as smartphone usage and artificial intelligence (AI).
Cho Yong-ik, Mayor of Bucheon, said, “Literacy education goes beyond learning to write; it is a process of gaining confidence and building the power to communicate with the world,” adding, “We will continue to work hard so that anyone can enjoy the opportunity to learn.”
Meanwhile, the Bucheon City Literacy Education Council is a local literacy education cooperative established in 2004, with 12 organizations currently participating. It is striving to improve the quality of education and support learners in continuing their education through joint projects such as poetry and illustration exhibitions, learning culture festivals, and training for related personnel.
