Ulsan, South Korea – A groundbreaking study conducted by researchers at UNIST and Korea University has revealed that interacting with AI-powered social chatbots can significantly alleviate feelings of loneliness and social anxiety. The findings suggest that these digital companions may serve as valuable tools for improving mental health.

The research team, led by Professor Jeongdu Yeong of UNIST's Biomedical Engineering Department and Professor Jo Cheol-hyeon of Korea University's Department of Psychiatry, analyzed the impact of AI social chatbots on 176 university students. For the study, participants interacted with Scatter Labs' "Lee Luda 2.0," a chatbot designed to engage in natural, emotionally-rich conversations.

After four weeks of interacting with the chatbot three or more times per week, participants reported a notable decrease in feelings of loneliness and social anxiety. The study found that the more participants shared personal experiences with the chatbot, the greater the reduction in loneliness.

"Our findings suggest that AI chatbots can provide emotional support by serving as a constant companion who offers empathetic responses," said Professor Jeongdu Yeong. "This could be particularly beneficial for young people struggling with loneliness or social anxiety."

Professor Jo Cheol-hyeon added, "This study demonstrates the potential for AI chatbots as a supplementary tool for mental health management. However, further research is needed to examine the long-term effects and effectiveness across different age groups."

The researchers noted that while the study provides promising initial results, additional research is necessary to explore the long-term implications of using AI chatbots for mental health interventions and to assess their effectiveness in diverse populations.
