The incidence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including herpes, syphilis, gonorrhea, HIV/AIDS, and HPV (human papillomavirus), transmitted through oral sex is rising globally. While many perceive oral sex as a safe alternative to intercourse, it carries a significant risk of STI transmission.   

Cases of STI Transmission Through Oral Sex:

Documented cases illustrate that gonorrhea bacteria can be transmitted orally, leading to infections in the eyes and mouth, and subsequently spreading to other partners through oral contact. Oral sex poses heightened risks when oral inflammations like stomatitis, herpes labialis (cold sores), or genital lesions are present.   

Preventive Tools for Safe Oral Sex:

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises the following preventive measures:

For men: Use unlubricated latex condoms or dental dams.
For women: Utilize dental dams or cut-open, unlubricated latex condoms. Individuals with latex allergies can opt for polyurethane condoms.   

Lorals: In 2022, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the sale of disposable latex underwear (Lorals), specifically designed to mitigate STI transmission during oral sex.   

The Importance of Prevention:

Despite the perception of oral sex as a low-risk sexual activity, it presents a tangible risk of STI acquisition. Employing preventive tools and undergoing regular STI screenings are crucial for safeguarding sexual health.
