Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province (Governor Woo Sang-ho) visited the scheduled site for the construction of the AI data center within the Bukpyung 2nd General Industrial Complex in Donghae on September 29 to inspect the progress and share project status updates with key officials from GS Group, which is leading the project.

Attendees included Gangwon Special Self-Governing State Governor Woo Sang-ho, Donghae Mayor Lee Jung-hak, GS E&R CEO Hwang Byung-so, GS Donghae Electric Power CEO Baek Yoon-hyun, and GS AI Infrastructure CEO Do Hyun-soo.

This schedule was arranged to directly check the progress of the Donghae AI Data Center construction on-site, listen to corporate difficulties, and timely prepare customized administrative support measures.

Governor Woo Sang-ho toured the Bukpyung Industrial Complex project site in person, listened to the AI data center progress updates from GS officials, and conducted an on-site inspection regarding the early commencement of core infrastructure required for data center establishment, such as electricity and water supply.

The Donghae Bukpyung AI Data Center is a mega-project on the largest scale in Asia, with a total capacity of 2.4GW (gigawatts) and an investment of up to 120 trillion won, including the establishment of cutting-edge equipment such as GPUs. It is scheduled to wrap up related approval procedures by October and break ground this year.

Gangwon Special Self-Governing State Governor Woo Sang-ho emphasized, "The establishment of an AI data center involving a major corporation on an empty site carries great significance in that large-scale investment is entering the region in earnest," adding, "We must cultivate specialized AI data center talent desired by companies to lead to quality jobs and youth settlement in the region, while expanding the participation of local businesses."

He continued, "Through follow-up investments and the attraction of related companies, we will foster the east coast region into a high-tech industrial hub centered around AI data centers."
