Czech Railways Sees 3% Passenger Increase in 2024, Driven by International Travel and Modernization

Prague, Czech Republic – Czech Railways (České dráhy) reported a significant milestone in 2024, transporting 168.8 million passengers across domestic and international routes. This figure represents a 3% increase compared to the previous year, signaling robust growth in the nation's rail sector.

The surge in passenger numbers was largely attributed to a 12% rise in international travel, with over 7 million passengers opting for cross-border journeys. Domestic travel also saw a healthy 2% increase. Industry experts have expressed satisfaction with these results, highlighting the efficacy of Czech Railways' strategic investments and service enhancements.

A key driver of this growth was the company’s proactive investment in modern rolling stock for both regional and intercity connections. This modernization effort contributed to the rise in passenger numbers from 157.05 million in 2022.

In 2024, passenger turnover reached 8.28 billion passenger-kilometers, an increase of 211 million from the previous year. The average trip distance remained consistent at 49.1 kilometers across all routes. Popular international routes connecting Prague with major European cities such as Dresden, Berlin, Hamburg, Brno, Vienna, and various Polish cities experienced high demand. To meet this demand, Czech Railways introduced new ComfortJet trains manufactured by Siemens.

These ComfortJet trains, capable of reaching speeds of 230 kilometers per hour, offer enhanced passenger capacity and comfort, featuring 100 additional seats compared to Railjet or EuroCity trains.

Despite the overall positive performance, Czech Railways faced significant challenges in September 2024 due to severe flooding caused by prolonged rains. The Moravia and Silesia regions were particularly affected, leading to temporary service disruptions. Routes near Ostrava, including international connections to Poland and Slovakia, were impacted, and services in Silesia were completely halted for several weeks.

Looking ahead, Czech Railways has ambitious plans to further expand its network through December 2025. The company aims to operate approximately 2.4 million train trips, covering 119 million kilometers. With an average of 6,605 trains running daily across the Czech Republic and beyond, Czech Railways is solidifying its position in the European transportation market.

The company's continued investment in cutting-edge technology and infrastructure has played a crucial role in boosting rail travel popularity. Passengers are increasingly choosing trains for their speed, convenience, and comfort. By focusing on modern technology and expanding route options, Czech Railways is effectively meeting the growing demand for both international and regional travel.

This success underscores the effectiveness of Czech Railways’ strategic initiatives in 2024 and reinforces its commitment to future growth. Despite facing natural challenges and intense competition, the Czech rail network continues to demonstrate steady growth, with ongoing efforts focused on enhancing services and expanding route options.
