ANDONG — More than 800 nurses and healthcare workers gathered at the Dongnak Hall in the Gyeongsangbuk-do Provincial Government complex to celebrate International Nurses Day and commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Nurses Association.

The event, held on the 4th, highlighted the vital role and deep dedication of nursing professionals who have served on the front lines of public health. International Nurses Day is designated globally by the International Council of Nurses (ICN) to honor the invaluable contributions nurses make to society. Meanwhile, the Gyeongsangbuk-do chapter boasts a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1946.

Key Highlights of the Celebration

The ceremony featured a commemorative video reflecting on the association's 80-year journey, followed by opening remarks and congratulatory messages. Outstanding professionals who have significantly advanced regional healthcare were honored with merit awards. The program concluded with an inspiring performance symbolizing the core values of life-respect, service, and dedication.

For eight decades, the Gyeongsangbuk-do Nurses Association has remained a steadfast pillar in safeguarding the health and well-being of local residents while continuously improving medical services across the region.

Expanding Roles in a Changing Healthcare Landscape

As public health challenges evolve—driven by rapid population aging, a rise in chronic conditions, and geographic healthcare disparities—the scope of nursing is expanding rapidly. Nurses now stretch far beyond traditional disease treatment into comprehensive community care, disease prevention, and localized health management, cementing their status as core pillars of the integrated care system.

Distinguished Guests and Leadership Remarks

The gathering drew prominent leaders from across the region and nation, including:

Lee Cheol-woo, Governor of Gyeongsangbuk-do
Kim Hee-su, Chairperson of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Provincial Council
Lee Man-hee and Lee Dal-hee, Members of the National Assembly
Shin Kyung-lim, President of the Korean Nurses Association
Kim Young-sil, President of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Nurses Association
Representatives from provincial and municipal nursing chapters, alongside nursing students.
Governor Lee Cheol-woo commended the nursing community, stating, "The past 80 years of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Nurses Association represent a profound history of dedication and selflessness by nursing professionals who have protected the lives and health of our residents." He added, "Moving forward, the provincial government will join hands with the nursing sector to build a healthier Gyeongsangbuk-do where every citizen can receive essential medical care and support right where they live."

In alignment with these goals, provincial authorities announced plans to actively listen to frontline perspectives and closely collaborate with the nursing community to empower nurses and expand their participation in the region's integrated care framework.
