SNS Market Soars Threefold in Korea, Driven by Women and the 30s Demographic

The South Korean market for goods sold through Social Network Services (SNS markets), such as Instagram and Facebook, has experienced explosive growth, tripling in size over the last two years. This surge highlights a significant shift in the nation's commerce landscape, propelled primarily by younger demographics, especially women in their 30s.

Key Growth Metrics

Data submitted to the National Assembly's Strategy and Finance Committee by the National Tax Service reveals the magnitude of this expansion. The number of registered individuals engaged in the SNS market business doubled from 695 in 2021 to 1,439 in 2023.

Even more telling is the increase in reported revenue. Over the same two-year period, the total reported income from the SNS market sector ballooned from approximately 54.3 billion KRW (roughly $39.8 million USD) to a staggering 142.5 billion KRW (approximately $104.5 million USD)—an almost threefold jump. This rapid escalation underscores the rising popularity and commercial viability of social media platforms as direct sales channels.

Demographic Drivers: Women and the 30s

The growth is heavily concentrated among the 20s and 30s age groups, establishing SNS market operations as a burgeoning new category of business, particularly appealing to these digitally native generations.

An analysis of 2023 tax data for businesses with annual income exceeding 50 million KRW showed that the 30s demographic was the most dominant force:

Women in their 30s accounted for 184 sellers.
Men in their 30s accounted for 95 sellers.
Overall, the data indicates a clear gender disparity, with women leading the charge. Both the number of registered sellers and the total reported revenue for women were roughly double those of their male counterparts, solidifying their role as the primary accelerators of this market segment.

This trend aligns with broader South Korean e-commerce dynamics, where women, particularly those in their 30s, have historically demonstrated high purchasing power and keen sensitivity to digital trends, often leading consumer spending in key categories like fashion and lifestyle goods. The shift toward personalized, mobile-centric shopping experiences like live commerce further caters to this demographic's preferences, making SNS platforms a natural fit for both purchasing and selling.

Regulatory Oversight and Future Outlook

Amidst this rapid expansion, there are growing calls for tighter regulatory oversight. Representative Cha Kyu-geun of the Cho Kuk Innovation Party emphasized the need to ensure tax compliance for this fast-growing sector.

"Given the increasing revenues in the SNS market business, particularly led by the 20s and 30s, it is imperative that continuous and repetitive sales or brokerage activities are accompanied by business registration and income reporting," Cha stated. He further stressed the necessity for the National Tax Service to provide thorough guidance and verification to prevent the emergence of a tax blind spot within the rapidly evolving digital economy.

The explosion of the SNS market reflects South Korea's highly advanced digital infrastructure and its consumers' enthusiastic adoption of new commerce models. As social media platforms continue to integrate sophisticated e-commerce tools, this market is poised for further growth. However, the regulatory challenge lies in keeping pace with the rapid innovation to ensure fair taxation and consumer protection in the increasingly fluid landscape of online commerce. The ongoing vigilance from authorities will be critical for the sustained and transparent development of this high-growth sector.
