NVIDIA Bolsters AI Ecosystem with $2.1 Billion Investment in Data Center Developer IREN

SANTA CLARA, Calif. & SYDNEY — In a move that signals a massive expansion of the global AI infrastructure landscape, NVIDIA has announced a strategic investment of up to $2.1 billion (approximately 2.9 trillion KRW) in IREN (formerly Iris Energy), a leading developer of next-generation data centers.

The deal, revealed on May 8, 2026, involves NVIDIA acquiring rights to purchase up to 30 million shares of IREN at $70 per share over a five-year period. If fully exercised, the transaction would solidify NVIDIA's position as a major stakeholder in the physical infrastructure required to power the generative AI revolution.

A 2-Gigawatt Vision: The Sweetwater Megaproject
The centerpiece of this partnership is the ambitious development of a 2-gigawatt (GW) AI-ready data center at IREN’s Sweetwater campus in Texas. To put the scale of this project into perspective, 2GW is enough electricity to power roughly 1.5 million American homes simultaneously.

By combining NVIDIA’s cutting-edge Blackwell and Rubin-class GPU architectures with IREN’s proven ability to secure land and high-voltage power connectivity, the two companies aim to solve the industry’s biggest bottleneck: physical capacity.

NVIDIA's Contribution: High-performance AI semiconductor technology and specialized liquid-cooling system designs.
IREN’s Contribution: Infrastructure expertise, renewable energy procurement, and large-scale site management.

The Evolution of IREN: From Mining to AI
IREN, headquartered in Sydney and listed on the NASDAQ, represents a successful pivot in the tech industry. Originally established as Iris Energy with a focus on sustainable Bitcoin mining, the company leveraged its access to low-cost renewable energy and massive electrical permits to transition into AI Cloud Services.

The company’s credibility skyrocketed earlier this year following a landmark $9.7 billion cloud capacity agreement with Microsoft. This deal positioned IREN not just as a landlord, but as a critical node in the global AI supply chain, attracting NVIDIA’s attention as a strategic partner rather than just a customer.

NVIDIA’s "Infrastructure-First" Strategy
Industry analysts view this investment as part of a broader trend where NVIDIA is vertically integrating its interests. Just a day prior, on May 7, NVIDIA secured a $500 million equity stake in fiber-optic leader Corning, ensuring a steady supply of high-speed interconnects.

By investing in IREN, OpenAI, and Marvell Technology, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang is effectively building a "fortress" around the AI ecosystem.

"We are no longer just a chip company," remarked one industry analyst. "NVIDIA is becoming the venture capitalist and the architect of the physical world that AI inhabits. By securing power and space through IREN, they ensure that their chips have a place to live and breathe."

Market Impact and Future Outlook
The partnership comes at a time when "power hunger" is the primary concern for Big Tech. With the Sweetwater project, NVIDIA and IREN are moving to mitigate risks associated with the tightening supply of industrial electricity in the United States.

As the 5-year warrant period begins, the market will be watching closely to see how quickly the 2GW capacity comes online. For IREN, the backing of the world's most valuable semiconductor company provides a massive liquidity cushion and a seal of approval that likely makes them the preferred partner for future hyperscale projects.

For NVIDIA, this $2.1 billion bet is a clear statement: The future of AI will not be limited by imagination, but by the raw power and cooling required to run it—and they intend to own both.
