Increased Earthquake Risk in the Campi Flegrei Volcanic Area Near Naples; 2,000 Buildings 'At Risk'

Naples, Italy - Recent increased seismic activity in the Campi Flegrei volcanic area near Naples in southern Italy has revealed that approximately 2,000 buildings are at serious risk. Amid growing anxiety among local residents due to frequent earthquakes, including a magnitude 4.4 tremor last week, the Italian government has announced emergency safety inspections and support measures.

Most Powerful Earthquake in 40 Years Heightens Resident Anxiety

On June 13th, the Campi Flegrei region experienced its most powerful earthquake in 40 years, measuring magnitude 4.4. The earthquake caused damage to some buildings and forced residents to evacuate, and subsequent minor aftershocks have further increased public anxiety.

2,000 Buildings Classified as 'High Risk'; Government Prepares Emergency Measures

The Italian government announced that emergency safety inspections conducted after the earthquake showed approximately 2,000 buildings are 'very highly or highly' vulnerable to earthquakes. In response, the government plans to invest about 100 million euros (approximately 144 billion Korean won) to mitigate earthquake risks and enhance building safety.

Key Measures:

Building Safety Reinforcement: Emergency reinforcement work and safety inspections for 2,000 at-risk buildings.
Support for Displaced Persons: Support for the return of displaced persons who lost their homes in the May earthquake (35 million euros).
Support for Housing Safety Improvements: Subsidies for residents to voluntarily improve housing safety (20 million euros annually).
Campi Flegrei Volcanic Area Observes Continuous Ground Uplift

Campi Flegrei is an area of active volcanic activity where the ground is uplifting due to a phenomenon called 'bradyseism.' This trend is increasing the frequency and intensity of earthquakes. 1  Experts warn that the Campi Flegrei volcanic area is one of the most complex volcanic regions in the world, emphasizing the need for continuous monitoring and preparedness.   

Residents Urge Active Government Measures

Local residents are expressing anxiety about the increasing frequency of earthquakes and urging the government to take more active measures. In particular, they emphasize the need to establish clear emergency evacuation plans and strengthen resident education.
