Central Arkansas Celebrates National Grilled Cheese Day with Diverse Twists: Annual April 12th Commemoration Showcases Unique Grilled Cheese Beyond Tradition

Little Rock, Arkansas – Every April 12th marks "National Grilled Cheese Day," a celebration of the quintessential American comfort food: the grilled cheese sandwich.

While typically made with just bread and warm, melted cheese, various restaurants and food trucks in Central Arkansas are captivating food lovers with special menus that add their own unique flair to this familiar dish.

Food blogger Kevin Shalin, who runs 'The Mighty Rib,' lauded the grilled cheese sandwich as "one of the ultimate comfort foods," asking, "Who doesn't like a good grilled cheese sandwich? It's nostalgic and comforting at its finest."

According to Shalin, Central Arkansas boasts several noteworthy spots offering excellent grilled cheese sandwiches. Among them, the 'Grilled Sandwich Company' food truck, located at 801 S. Chester Street, stands out with its inventive offerings like the jalapeno popper, buffalo chicken, and even lobster grilled cheese.

"For those of you who don't want to make one at home, you're in luck because there are some great options in the area," Shalin recommended. "The lunch menu at 'Brave New' is great, and 'BCW (Bread Cheese Wine)' and 'Grilled Sandwich Company' are particularly impressive."

'Brave New Restaurant' offers a distinctive grilled cheese featuring fontina and baby Swiss cheese slices with shrimp on honey wheat bread. 'Bread Cheese Wine,' located in Little Rock, also provides a diverse selection of grilled cheese sandwiches, including blackberry goat cheese, hot honey brie, and French onion grilled cheese variations.

According to online review site Yelp, highly-rated grilled cheese spots in Central Arkansas include 'Four Quarter Bar,' 'Whitewater Tavern,' 'Dizzy’s Gypsy Bistro,' 'Brood & Barley,' 'Lost Forty Brewing,' and 'The Root Café.'

Meanwhile, for those who prefer to make their grilled cheese sandwiches at home, dairy company Borden is running a contest through WinFreeBordenCheese.com, offering a year's supply of cheese as a prize.

Thus, in Central Arkansas, "National Grilled Cheese Day" is being celebrated not only with traditional grilled cheese but also with a variety of ingredients and unique combinations that offer new flavors and delights to food enthusiasts. The charm of the grilled cheese, reborn from a simple dish into a creative culinary experience, is captivating many.

The grilled cheese sandwich first emerged in the early 20th century in the United States as an affordable and convenient food. It is believed to have originated during the Great Depression, made by grilling thinly sliced cheese and bread, and later became widely loved as a school lunch and home meal.

Today, the grilled cheese sandwich has evolved beyond a simple dish into a culinary creation with endless possibilities through various ingredients and cooking methods. The types of bread alone range from white bread, rye bread, sourdough, to brioche, and cheeses with different flavors and textures, such as cheddar, mozzarella, gouda, brie, and Monterey Jack, are utilized.

Furthermore, fusion-style grilled cheese sandwiches that create a sweet and savory harmony by adding bacon, ham, tomatoes, onions, jalapenos, mushrooms, and even fruits or jams are gaining popularity. Cooking methods are also being diversely attempted, such as grilling the surface with mayonnaise instead of butter for a crispier texture or adding herbs and spices to enhance the flavor.

In this way, the grilled cheese sandwich is a dish loved by people of all ages, transcending generations, and it is expected to evolve into even more diverse forms through continuous creative endeavors in the future.
