Copenhagen, Denmark – Sofie Junge Pedersen, the Danish women's national team midfielder, has been named the Guardian's Footballer of the Year for 2024. The 32-year-old was recognized not only for her exceptional performance on the pitch but also for her unwavering commitment to addressing climate change and promoting human rights.

In an interview with the Guardian, Pedersen emphasized the importance of hope, stating, "If you don't have hope, you don't do anything." She highlighted the role of hope in driving change, even in the face of adversity. The Guardian's award is not solely based on on-field achievements but also recognizes players who have overcome challenges, helped others, and demonstrated exemplary sportsmanship.

Pedersen has been particularly vocal about climate change and human rights issues. She played a leading role in drafting an open letter to FIFA, calling for the organization to sever ties with Saudi Arabia's state-owned oil company, Aramco. The letter, signed by 135 female players from 27 countries, condemned the sponsorship deal as a "severe blow to women's football."

During the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, Pedersen spearheaded a project aimed at offsetting the carbon emissions generated by players' air travel.

Pedersen's passion for environmental and social justice was ignited in 2009 when she attended the COP15 climate change conference in Copenhagen. Witnessing the devastating impacts of climate change on communities in Kenya and Tanzania, she became determined to make a difference.

Growing up in a politically engaged household in Denmark, Pedersen developed a strong sense of social responsibility. Her mother's belief in the importance of paying taxes had a profound influence on her values.

Beyond her climate activism, Pedersen has also been involved in various humanitarian initiatives. She has worked with the Danish Refugee Council to support refugees from Afghanistan and Syria and has contributed to projects aimed at empowering girls through sports in Ghana and Zambia.

The Guardian praised Pedersen as a "true leader" who is driving positive change both on and off the football field. Her commitment to social responsibility has made her a role model for athletes worldwide.
